Health and Safety Manager
Health & Safety Manager, Medik8
Location: Aylesbury Innovation Centre, Aylesbury, UK
Salary £45,000 - £50,000
At Medik8 we are more than ever differentiating ourselves from our competitors, pioneering the market, and being a key leader in the skincare industry. As a brand we are led by science; innovation and technological advancements have always been at our core. This is what makes us incomparable against the competition, by producing some of the most advanced skincare on the market.
We are seeking a proactive and experienced Health & Safety Manager to join our team at Medik8. Based at our Aylesbury Innovation Centre, you will be a key figure in developing and maintaining a robust safety culture across our two sites: our main office and our Manufacturing, Research & Warehousing facility. This is a critical role that ensures the well-being of our employees, visitors, and contractors while maintaining our commitment to operational excellence and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Systems & Standards Leadership
Act as the definitive subject matter expert and strategic partner to the operational business, providing authoritative H&S counsel. You will horizon-scan for upcoming legislative changes and interpret their impact, ensuring Medik8's policies and procedures not only comply with the law (HASAWA 1974) but are proactively ahead of the curve.
Architect, implement, and continuously improve the company’s H&S management framework in close collaboration with the Quality team. You will own and champion all associated policies, procedures, and documentation (risk assessments, safe systems of work), ensuring they are dynamically integrated into daily operations and not just static documents.
Lead and own the Health & Safety workstreams for all critical regulatory and quality standards, including FDA, TGA, SMETA, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 22716 (GMP). You will serve as the primary H&S liaison for all external auditors, showcasing our systems, and driving a culture of "always-on" audit readiness.
Champion and govern the entire lifecycle of hazardous substances. You will go beyond basic compliance to embed a culture of 'cradle-to-grave' chemical stewardship, from R&D introduction to final disposal. You will master and simplify COSHH, ensuring assessments are practical, understood by all, and ruthlessly effective.
Serve as the designated Fire Safety Lead, taking full ownership of fire prevention and emergency response. You will move beyond compliance drills to ensure our emergency plans are robust, realistic, and stress-tested. You will develop and empower a team of Fire Wardens, making them confident and capable first responders.
Culture & Engagement Leadership
Act as the architect and visible champion of Medik8’s 'safety-first' culture. You will inspire and engage colleagues at all levels, transforming H&S from a set of rules into a shared organisational value. You will design and lead a world-class training programme that goes far beyond induction, empowering colleagues to own safety.
Act as a coach, mentor, and partner to all department heads, embedding H&S ownership deep within their teams. You will chair and invigorate the H&S Committee, transforming it from a reporting forum into an engine for collaborative change and colleague engagement.
Operational Performance & Improvement
Lead a find-it, fix-it proactive hazard identification programme through a highly visible site presence. You will drive high-quality, root-cause investigations for all H&S incidents, accidents, and near-misses, focusing on systemic improvements and not on individual blame. You will champion a no-blame near-miss reporting culture as a vital tool for preventing future incidents.
Translate raw H&S data into actionable business intelligence for the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and operational heads. You will own all H&S reporting, focusing on leading indicators (proactive measures) not just lagging indicators (accidents). You will escalate critical risks and incidents to the SLT with urgency and provide clear, data-driven recommendations for action.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential Qualifications & Experience
NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent Level 6 qualification) is essential.
Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH), or GradIOSH actively working towards Chartered status.
Proven experience as a Health & Safety Manager within a fast-paced, highly-regulated environment (e.g., cosmetics, pharmaceutical, chemical manufacturing, or FMCG).
Demonstrable experience in managing H&S for multi-disciplinary sites, including manufacturing, warehousing, and R&D/laboratory operations.
Technical Expertise
Essential, hands-on experience in leading the H&S components for external audits and regulatory inspections (e.g., ISO 9001, 14001, 22716, SMETA, FDA, TGA).
Expert-level, applied understanding of UK H&S legislation, with a proven ability to interpret and apply it pragmatically in a complex operational setting.
Deep technical expertise in chemical safety (COSHH) and DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations).
Strong analytical skills with a data-driven approach. You must be able to conduct high-quality, root-cause investigations and translate H&S data into actionable business intelligence for senior management.
Leadership & Cultural Fit
A natural coach, mentor, and partner. You must have outstanding communication skills and the ability to build credibility, influence, and engage at all levels, from the factory floor to the Senior Leadership Team.
A visible and engaging champion for change. You must have a genuine passion for transforming safety culture from a compliance exercise into a shared organisational value, with experience in empowering "safety champions".
A proactive, 'hands-on' and methodical problem-solver. You must be highly organised, with a relentless focus on continuous improvement and a 'find-it, fix-it' mentality.
Full proficiency in Google Suite and experience with H&S management software.
