Reporting to the Head of Transformation, we are seeking a strategic and highly influential Health & Safety Manager to join our team at the Aylesbury Innovation Centre. This is a pivotal role during a period of rapid organisational growth. You will be the architect of our safety framework, ensuring that as we scale, our safety systems and culture remain robust, compliant and ahead of the curve. This role requires a change management expert who can influence across a matrix structure, ensuring safety is a core value from the shop floor to the Senior Leadership Team.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Systems & Standards Leadership
Act as the definitive subject matter expert and strategic partner to the business, providing authoritative counsel on all H&S matters.
Architect and implement a robust, scalable H&S management system that integrates seamlessly with our Quality Management Systems. You will ensure that policies are not just compliant with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, but are designed to support a high-growth manufacturing environment.
Lead the H&S workstreams for all critical regulatory and quality standards, including FDA, TGA, SMETA, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 22716 (GMP).
Serve as the primary liaison for external auditors, showcasing our systems and driving a culture of "always-on" audit readiness.
Govern the entire lifecycle of hazardous substances, embedding a "cradle-to-grave" stewardship approach. You will simplify COSHH for a complex R&D and manufacturing setting, ensuring assessments are practical and effective.
Act as the designated Fire Safety Lead, taking full ownership of fire prevention and emergency response strategy. You will develop a high-performing network of Fire Wardens across the site.
Change Management and Matrix Influence
Lead the transformation of Medik8’s safety culture. You will use proven change management techniques to move the organisation from reactive compliance to proactive safety leadership.
Operate effectively within a matrix structure, building high-trust relationships with Department Heads to embed H&S ownership within their respective teams without having direct line authority.
Act as a coach and mentor to operational leaders, empowering them to lead safety conversations and make H&S an integral part of daily production meetings.
Chair and reinvigorate the H&S Committee, transforming it into a high-impact forum for collaborative change and employee engagement.
Data Intelligence and Performance
Develop and own a comprehensive H&S dashboard.
Translate complex data into actionable business intelligence for the Senior Leadership Team, focusing on leading indicators and predictive trends rather than just lagging incident rates.
Implement visual management tools for the shop floor, ensuring that safety performance and near-miss learnings are transparent and understood by every team member.
Oversee high-quality, root-cause investigations for all incidents. You will focus on systemic improvements and the human factors of safety, championing a no-blame culture to encourage transparent reporting.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential Qualifications & Experience
NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent Level 6 qualification) is essential.
Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH), or GradIOSH actively working towards Chartered status.
Proven experience as a Health and Safety Manager or Senior Manager within a fast-paced, highly regulated manufacturing environment (cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, or FMCG).
Demonstrable experience in managing H&S for multi-disciplinary sites, including manufacturing, warehousing, and R&D laboratory operations.
Technical Expertise and Leadership
Expert-level understanding of UK H&S legislation, with the ability to interpret and apply it pragmatically in a rapidly changing operational setting.
Significant experience in leading H&S components for external regulatory inspections (e.g., ISO, FDA, TGA).
Advanced skills in influence without authority. You must be able to demonstrate how you have successfully managed stakeholders and driven change in a matrix environment.
A Change Management mindset: you are comfortable with ambiguity and have the resilience to lead an organisation through growth and transition.
Strong analytical skills with a data-driven approach to problem-solving.
Full proficiency in Google Suite and experience with modern H&S management software.
